Here is a little more about Colleen and how she started her business as an artist and mural maker.
"My name is Colleen Jorgensen and I live in a small town in Northern California between Lake Tahoe and Sacramento. I’ve been married for 20 years and have 3 grown stepsons and one 3 year old grandson, who is the light of my life. I wasn’t able to have children myself so I welcomed my stepsons with open arms in 1992. I’ve been an artist for 15 years now – something I started to keep my sanity in a houseful of boys.
I’m a chronic DIYer. It comes from being raised at our family resort in the Sierra Nevada mountains where necessity was often the mother of invention. At age 19 I opened a flower shop with my 1st husband with absolutely no floral experience. I was a quick study, but by the time I had a good wedding clientele, our finances ran out and we closed the shop.
I took my one and only art class in college. I quit painting for 20 years after that. Not a positive experience. The instructor didn’t want me to paint realistic paintings.
After my sons moved in, I struggled as a parent. Unable to find stepparenting resources, I published a bimonthly magazine, Step Parenting Today in 1993. I wrote the articles, did the layout and sold the ads. And burned out in 2 years.
Shortly after, I painted a Winnie the Pooh sign for the shop owner where I worked. My husband, having no idea I could draw or paint, was indignant that I was wasting my ‘God-given’ talent. So I started painting images on the walls in my house. Friends saw my murals and hired me.
In the early days I’d spend weeks in a client’s house. Their walls would have a myriad of torn magazine pages that I used for photo references. But I loved decorating people’s homes with art. Plus, I always got to know the family’s dog really well!
Now I can do a full wall mural in under a week. I have never taken another art class. I just learned thru trial and error. My favorite things to paint our baby rooms and pet portraits, which isn’t that surprising, is it?"
